New Transmission  47                 April  2012

After a few minutes of bending this is what my piece looks like. I needed both of them curved slightly in the middle but just over an inch tall. The reason for the taller piece is because the transmission is higher than the floor right at the edges. Once the taller bend cleared the trans the radius on the top was increased to be more flat. To fasten it down I'll use four 6-32 screws and riv-nuts like the other panel.

This is what it looks like with both of them in place. I know it's not the best looking but it should work pretty good once the insulation is glued on and the console is back in place. Speaking of the console, I'll need to add some riv-nuts to these new panels so I can fasten the console to them. After cutting the floor so the trans would fit, I lost my mounting holes that I had it fastened to that will be coming up soon.

This is the shifter that was in my old Camaro that I sold back in 1999. It's made by Mr. Gasket and I got a great deal on if back in 1976. Larry gave it to me and said that I could cut it up anyway I'd like to use for a mockup.

After bolting the shifter on I found out that it was a little tall and was way to close to the seats when going into some of the gears. I tried switching the shifter turret which helped but it was still to close to the seats.

Here is the first of two cuts that I made. I drilled a new set of holes and tried it again but I still didn't like the way it felt (as you see it below). It was still to close to the seats so I made one more cut and drilled two more holes.

That seemed to do it and left the shifter in a comfortable position that I could use. Unfortunately I won't be able to use this one because it has the wrong threads for my shift knob but now I have a mockup. Looks like it's time to start thinking about what I'm going to do for a shifter.

Next week I'll be working on insulating the new aluminum panels, modifying the sides of the console, making a new center section for the console, bleeding the brakes and doing some more lighting for it too. And if I have time I'll look into the shifter thing as well.
