New Transmission  3                 Jan  2012

Before I took the exhaust out I had to see how the insulation held up over the years. What you see here is the main electrical plug going into the transmission and on the other side of that silver looking stuff is my exhaust pipe. I'll have to say it seems to be just fine as all those colored wires are in one piece. The smaller plug on top is for the speedometer.

Here you can see the cross-member and driveshaft hoop that I made. The cross-member has four bolts holding it in and if you look close you can see two more holes (one per side) that I'm pretty sure I'll be using for the 5 speed. I'm not sure if I'll have to make a new cross-member or not until I have the new one bolted in place but if I do those other holes will come in handy.

Enough talk lets get that old trans out of there!!

After an hour of unbolting stuff, here I am still alive. Notice that the transmission has a slight lean to it. Well here's what I think happened...after I had the jack placed right in the center of the pan, it moved over a couple of inches once I had some weight on it. I believe the reason is because of the drain plug. This area around the drain plug is raised just a little bit allowing the trans to slide off-center slightly while I was getting it loose from the engine. Good thing I placed that strap on there otherwise I might have had a big problem. The jack is all the way down at this point and that's all the clearance there was between the chassis and the trans housing. Notice how close the front of the trans is to my oil filter. And when I moved those jack wheels across that seam in the floor, my heart almost stopped because they wanted to stay-put in that low spot and not move.

After a little time playing in that crack, I finally got it out. I also have a smaller floor-jack which helped me get from the bigger jack to my dolly. I put a piece of plywood on top of the dolly which sits nice and flat so now I can roll it out of the way for safe keeping till I sell it.

Here is my entire exhaust system, driveshaft along with my transmission off the to side and out of the way.

Remember those old wooden creepers that really don't roll around very good? Well I still have one and it doesn't roll very well but the only reason I haven't trashed it is because my mom made it for me back in the mid 70's as a birthday present. Notice all the stars and rainbows along the sides and a big red heart near the end. My mom had her ideas of what was cool back then and because I had other thoughts, I didn't use it much. But now I use it all the time and can't toss it out because of sentimental reasons.

I have a lot more work to do still so drop back by soon to see more progress on the trans swap.
