I covered the aluminum with foam and
then glued on some material. I also made a top piece to cover most of
the latch the same way. To hold the two pieces together I used some
3/4" X 3/4" aluminum angle and cut-and-formed it to bend
around the corners. The black stuff that you see under the angle is
sticky-backed hook-and-loop (Velcro) to hold it together. There's not a
lot of strength by using this method but I didn't really need it here
because it's just going to cover something.

Here is what it looks like with the
latch covered and now I don't have to look at the cable and clamp which
is under there, but you'd never know it now. To hold the cover to the
rear piece, I used more of the angle aluminum running vertical
this time with the hook-and-loop on both sides like the cover has. This
makes it very easy to install and remove if needed. After trying to
latch the trunk lid, it was hitting the top a little and wanted to move
the cover away from the rear piece. I thought I had enough clearance
between the two but I guess not. I ended up taking off the top cover
piece and removing some of the material so I could grind away some
aluminum and then re-glue the material back on. This worked and now the
trunk lid closes and clears my new cover with clearance to spare (I just
went back and read the last sentence and laughed out load because of the
use of all the words with "C" in them....hehe). A few more
things to finish up in the trunk area and then I can start installing
things on the inside again :-]

As I was walking to the garage the
other day, I noticed a new look in my backyard. The Santa Ana wind was
blowing again and this time it brought me something. It was my neighbors
storage shed, but which neighbor? I had no idea how far this traveled
but there is was. Turns out the next day the owner knocked on the door
and wanted it back which was fine by me. The Santa Ana wind blows from
left to right (in the picture) which means it flew over my east fence, across my yard and
up against the west fence. The neighbor said it was nailed down but it
sure ain't now. We had to disassemble the thing to remove it because it
was big. The size was about 16 X 14 X 6 feet and was a total loss. I
didn't find any wicked witch's under it either...
