33 Coupe Interior 10        7/18/04

Here it is in place and all polished up but the flash of the camera makes it look washed out. The angle of the new bezel fits great and all I need to do now is install the glass and wiper arm. I guess I'll have to wait till after the car is painted for those two items. At this point, it's on to more upholstery.

What I'm going to be working on next is my headliner. It measures 38" X 44" X 1/8" and is a one piece fiberglass panel like the rest of the interior panels. The rear of the headliner has a large radius which curves-up about 2". As we go towards the front, those curves start to flatten-out along with no radius' at the corners. What I'm doing here is roughing up the surface so glue will stick to it. I used some 80 grit sandpaper on my sanding block to do most of it and did the curved sections by hand. Notice all the holes in this panel (small white dots). Those holes are for all the mounting clips that hold the panel in place. I'll be installing the clips before I glue the foam on.

Here you can see the foam that has been glued down. I cut the foam 3" larger on all sides in case I put it on wrong. Once you touch the two surfaces together, that's it so this was just a little insurance on my part. Now you can still pull the two pieces apart but it takes the top layer off the foam which leaves no glue on your working surface. Now how do think I know that! I had my wife help me with this larger piece which made life much easier. Four hands were better than two in this case. After the foam was glued on, I trimmed the excess off with a razor blade.

It's a little hard to see here but if you look close, you can see two bumps in the foam in this shot. The reason for the bumps is because of the metal mounting clips that were covered by the foam. I had already experienced this on a previous panel so this was no surprise. I have to remove the bumps or they would show through so to do that I used some 100 grit sandpaper and carefully sanded them down till they were gone. Now you don't want to go too far either or you'll be in trouble as the leather will mold to the smallest rise or recess. Taking your time here is key.
