With the aid of some ropes, I could
have them hold the tubing while I did some measuring. I used this system
when I installed my headliner if you remember. What I plan on doing is
cutting the roof hoop in two places so I can take it out. Where the two
cuts are made, I'm going to install some couplers like I did the
down-bars. My plan is to cut the hoop right about where the left rope is
located. This way the main hoop will have four one foot long pieces
welded to it. Two for the down-bars (which are already welded on) and
two for the roof hoop. By doing it like this, I can still get the main
hoop out by leaning it towards the front of the car and sliding it out.
At least I'm pretty sure I can.

I used a four foot long level (which
was used like a straight edge) and placed it against the ends of the
hoop. Then I marked a line 13" from the ends on both (driver and passenger)
sides of the tube. I also scribed a line along both tubes where the cuts
would be made so I could have a point of reference if need be.

I used some small pieces of wood as
shims so I could get the hoop at the right height while I was fitting
the ends. I had to make many many trips in and out of the car trying to
get the fit just right. After awhile, the ropes started to stretch and
sag while I was working so I came up with a way to adjust them a little
more.

By adding some spacers to the top,
it tightened the ropes just right. You do what ya gotta do....right!
