I wanted to have four speakers in the
car so I had too come up with a location for the two rear ones. I knew
that there was a small area below the floor in the trunk that might work
and after doing some measuring, it looked like it might be just enough room.
The spot I'm talking about would be next to the floor on the inside of
the car right behind the seats. My seats would be away from the rear
panel once in the driving position which meant that the sound from the speakers
should have plenty of room which would work fine in
this location. The seats also would be reclined a slight amount which
meant that there would be even more room at the speakers location
(12" or more). Before I removed the floor in the trunk, I scribed a line on the
firewall that separates the interior from the trunk to give me a
reference point. After removing the floor, I then scribed another line below
the first one to show the thickness of the floor along with it's
location. I have about 6 1/2" to work with which is just enough for
the speakers that I'm going to use. I wasn't going too be able to have
very much distance between the two speakers because of the way I made my
floor. What I needed to do was place the speakers between the three
bolts that hold down the floor which were 16" apart. This meant
that the speakers were going to be about 15" center-to-center
because I'm going to be using 6"X9" speakers and I needed to
clear the floor mounting bolts on each side.

I found the center for each speaker
from the trunk side and drilled an 1/8" hole through at that point
for reference. I then made a pattern of the speakers out of paper and laid
out the center of them. I made a hole at the paper cut-outs center with
a pencil and then put a 1/8" diameter pin through the hole that I
drilled earlier all the way through the center of my paper pattern and taped the patterns to the
inside. I also made some horizontal lines on the paper so I could line
the two up with a straight edge to make sure everything was right. This would
give me the location that I needed for my speakers so I checked the
location one last time before I scribed around
the paper cut-outs and then
removed the firewall from the trunk so I could cut some
fiberglass.

After sliding my seats all the way
forward and folding them as far as they would go, I was able to make
just enough room to work without taking them completely out. This is what I ended
up with after I broke out the Dremel and did some cutting. Notice the
areas at the bottom of the new holes that are rectangular. These are on
the trunk side which are corrugated pieces that run vertically to add strength to the
bulkhead that is between the interior and trunk.

Now I needed to make the same cutout
in the firewall so I used my 1/8" hole (red arrow) that I drilled
earlier and again used my paper template to mark a line around the area
that needed to be cut away. This worked out great and before I cut away
anything, I installed the interior panel that would have upholstery on
it and drilled through it too give
me a reference which I double checked by scribing a line on the backside
of the interior panel where I already made my first cutout. They
matched!!
