The crankshaft I bought is made by Scat. It's made out of a forged 4340 steel and heat treated (hardened),
shot penned (adds surface strength), Magnetic Particle Inspected
(checked for cracks) and polished to a mirror finish.
This crank has been lightened by
drilling through the rod journals to reduce reciprocating weight. It has
also be knife-edged which is you can see if you look close at the bottom
of the picture. This helps cut it's way through the oil and air as its
turning. All this makes a difference when your trying to make
horsepower.
Here you can see the .125" radius
in the corner of the main bearing journals. This adds strength as a
radius is stronger than a sharp corner. Most factory cranks don't have
this added radius. You can also see the lightening hole in the rod
journals.
This is a shot of the rod journal.
Notice it has the same size radius as the mains do. You can see the
chamfered oil holes which adds some well needed oiling to these
bearings.
