After installing my electric trunk
release, I needed a way to have it open far enough so I could get my
fingers under the deck lid so I could lift it. The release system works
just fine but it didn't allow my much room for my fingers so I bought a
door popper made by
AutoLoc.
Door poppers are very simple really as they are a spring loaded device which mounts to a
bracket of some kind. By having spring pressure on the surface (in my
case, the deck lid) when it's released, this would raise the lid to about an inch which would be
just right to get my fingers under it. AutoLoc uses
aluminum with a stainless nut and spring. You can adjust the spring pressure by
either cutting the spring or using a different length bolt in the end
(hidden in this picture). The black piece on the end is made out of
rubber.

I had some brackets laying around and
made the one on the left out of one like you see on the right. This is
1/8" thick mild steel and it worked out great for my bracket that
would hold the popper in place. All I did was cut it out with a hacksaw,
then drilled two 1/4" holes to mount the bracket and then drilled a
3/4" hole for the door popper to mount in. To get the shape that you
see was
done on a belt sander. Crude but effective!

I had to mount the popper somewhere
near the release and there was just enough room beside it for that to
happen. It doesn't
look all that cool but it does work very good.

This shot will give you a better idea
of how it looks from the top. I'll have to plate or paint the bracket
later on so it looks better. Cross another project off the list.
