Now that we have the rods assembled, it's time to put some pistons rings on but there's one more thing to do before the rings go on.
 

 

 

The piston rings that I bought need to be fitted to each individual cylinder before they can be installed on the pistons. They call this a "file-fit ring". Depending on what application your running, the end gaps will be different. Mine are going to be gapped at a minimum of .0165" so my target size is .018".
 

 

 

Now when fitting the rings in the cylinder bores, you have to make sure that they are square with the bore or your not going to get an accurate reading. To make sure the ring is square, I made a tool that is .005" smaller than the bore and is about a 1/2" long.
 

 

 

All you have to do is get the ring started and then push it down till it comes in contact with the shoulder of the tool and this squares it with almost no effort. Remove the tool and check the gap.
