33 Coupe Chassis 32        1/18/04

By making a mock-up of a muffler with this cardboard box, it gives me an idea of just how much clearance I'll have to work with. Not much...as you can tell. The box is 4 1/4" X 8" X 16" which is the size of most mufflers that I wanted to buy, but after seeing how much room I had left over, I might be buying one a little shorter. The distance between the end of the muffler (right side of box) is getting very close to the cross member that I have to go over. This means that the exhaust pipe will have to make a sharp bend to go over it and I'll need a little more room to achieve this, so this is one more reason to buy a shorter one. I'll also be gaining some room on the sides because the mufflers will be oval (not rectangular like my mock-up) so that helps.

If you look at the top part of the "X" member, you can see the brake line and get a better idea of what I'm talking about. Now you can see why I want to move them away from those hot tin cans.

Here is one of the rear brake lines marked and ready to cut. Now this line is one of two that I had to make when I was relocating my rear sway-bar. I hated to cut them because doing things twice sucks. After flaring the ends of both lines, I reinstalled them and was now ready to work on the shorter one that feeds them both.

Here is the shorter one that I was talking about earlier. I was going to cut both ends off and reuse the fittings for my new line. The bent welding rod next to it was the pattern that I needed.....really!
