Chess set 8
November 2002

Here is the bottom after gluing and ready for machining. I used 6" X 16 1/2" pieces for the bottom and glued them together. The final size for the bottom was 16 1/4" square. The sides finished at 2 1/2" X 17 1/2" and are mitered at 45 degrees. The bottom fits inside the sides so it has a clean look to it. I used two 1/4" dowels in each side-to-bottom for strength. After gluing it all together, it's now time to work on the divider system to keep the pieces separated. Not shown in the picture below is a slot to put a middle piece in to separate both sides. The depth of the slot is 1/8" and the width is 3/4".

Now that I have the sides and bottom finished, I can work on the divider system. All these pieces go together with no glue. It's press fit together and if made right, will not come apart easy. All these pieces will have red velvet glued to them so I had to remember to cut the slots big enough to fit the velvet and boards together. There are three different size pieces that make-up the divider system. The divider size for the small (five shown in picture below) pieces are 1/4" X 1 1/8" X 16 1/4". The pieces that will fit into the end (two shown in picture below, second and third from top) slots are 1/2" X 1 1/8" X 16 1/4". These pieces all have slots that go half way through. The reason for this is because when you put them together, they will fit flush with each other and will have a nice appearance.

Notice the middle slot is a little bigger. This is for the center board (shown below at top) which is 3/4" X 1 1/4" X 16 1/4". Now this board will fit into the box bottom 1/8" deep and is why it's a different size. I didn't put velvet on this piece and was planed from the start not to. I did this to add some contrast but if I did it again, I would put velvet on it.
