Here is the Pawn that came hot off the Lathe. Now it's ready for the second operation, which is going to clean up the bottom. 
 

 

 

If you notice the little pointed thing poking out from the bottom of the King, this is caused from the parting tool on the Lathe. This happens to all the pieces but gets cleaned up later. These pieces all had a little extra work to be done on the Mill. The Rook had little cuts 1/16" wide in the top like a castle. The Bishop had a slit put in it like a mouth which was 1/16" wide. The Queen had little dimples put on her crown and the King had a cross cut in the top. The little round piece on the right is the base for the Knight.
 

 

 

Here is the machine that is used for the second operation which cleans up the bottom of all the pieces. It's a Hardinge Chucker which is a very precision Lathe. Everything here is manual and it was used to polish the pieces too.
