Working With Wood Continued

Here is what it looks like so far, and this operation doesn't take long. Now it's time to blend the ends of the boards to my radii.

For the second operation, I swapped my boring bar for a 1/2" end mill that I'll use to cut the 13" dimension with. And again I'm using my clamp like I did before. This went nice and smooth just like the first operation did.

Once I had all my boards done with the first two operations, I used my belt sander and sanded right up to the pencil line. This method works great and goes pretty fast.

I used my belt sander on the handle but I could only go so far. The area between the 1.0" radius and the handle needed a different method to blend it correctly so I used my spindle sander. This went quickly as well because there wasn't that much material to blend.

Now it's time to remove all those belt sanding marks using my sanding block. I put my soft jaws in my bench vise and started a long road of sanding. This isn't all that hard, it's just time consuming...and it's a good shoulder exercise.

Now it's time to work on the recessed area using my router template. And I'll be using my plunge router that has a few features that my older one doesn't have. See that red dial near the top? That's a speed control, which works great for larger diameter cutters. I have it set to number 2 which is plenty fast for my 1 1/8" router bit with a 1/4" radius.

The base that comes with most routers works great for the majority of jobs that I do, but this project requires a much larger one. I made this base a few years ago for other projects, and it works great to span across your work area, like the one I'm working on here.

After I removed the small one I used the same screws to mount the larger one. Pretty simple. And here you can see the cutter I'll be using, which will leave a nice radius along the sides of my boards.

Here is the other side of my cardboard template to show you what I'll be doing. The center will be 1/4" deep leaving the outer area 1/2" wide. This should provide plenty of room for the food without it falling off the edges.

I'm sanding everything with 150 grit, except the center because this area will be removed with the router. This operation is just looking ahead because sanding that 1/2" wide section later would be much harder.
