Working With Wood Continued

Now that all my boards are flat, it's time to bring in the length and width. Here I'm cutting the 10" dimension.

Next it was time to bring in the over-all length which is 18 1/2" using my crosscut sled. Once I had my work stop set, this goes nice and fast.

Here is my full size template again, which I placed on my work piece and then traced around it with a pencil. If you look close, you can see the lines on my work piece.

Then I used my bandsaw with a narrow blade and cut near the line.

What you see here is my work piece from above, which I'm now using as my template in place of my cardboard one. Yes I've cut, machined and sanded the entire perimeter to my finished dimensions to make sure everything worked right, and to adjust the handle slightly to make sure it was centered.

Now that I'm happy with my new template (compared to the flimsy cardboard one), I'm laying out my pencil lines once again, which will be much easier now (compared to the flimsy cardboard).

So now let's go through each step to see how I got to this point.

Just like before, I used my bandsaw to cut near the lines which leaves me extra stock to work with.

Here you can see what I'm talking about a little better.

I'm getting ready to use my new multipurpose fixture on my milling machine below. The first operation will be machining the 1.0" radius (two places) using my boring head. The three 1/4" pieces of MDF that you see will act as sacrificial pieces under my actual boards to make sure I don't get any tear-out as my boring bar exits out the bottom. These sacrificial pieces sit below the redwood, which still allows my work piece to locate properly.

Here I have my clamp in place (to hold my work piece), and now I'm ready to cut my radius.

Here is a before and after shot of what it looks like after machining. I fed my boring bar by hand, going nice and slow. Once this side was done, I moved over to the other location and repeated the process.
