Art Project  1                                                9-2025

I've had an art project in mind for a few years now (since 2020) but never got around to doing it, until now. This will be my fifth art project that I've posted so far and I'll leave most of it up to your imagination as to what it is.

Working With Wood

To display my project I'll be making a shadow box made out of alder. The size of the box will be 20" X 16" X 3" with a some clear acrylic on the front.

I sent my work pieces through my thickness planer and brought the size down to 1/2".

Then I used my table saw and ripped some pieces to 3" wide.

Here is what I have so far but they are slightly oversize in length.

I used my miter saw and set it to 45 degrees. This will give me the mitered corners that I want.

I used my saw stop to make sure each set of pieces were exactly the same length.

Here are my pieces that are 20" and 16" long after the miter cuts (two of each).

Like I said before, I'll be using clear plastic on the front, which will be .110" thick (just under 1/8"). I'm using my table saw to produce a groove for this and it worked great because my blade is .125" thick (exactly 1/8"). I also gave each piece a dado that was 1/4" X .200 deep" that will be used for some 3/16" plywood on the back of the box.

Here is what the groove and dado look like. Now it's time to cut some plywood for the back of the box, which is the easy part. However, when the time comes to do the plastic piece, that will be a different story.

I bought a small piece of plywood that was 24" X 24" X 3/16" to use for the back. Now if you look at the dado above it's easy to calculate the dimension for the plywood. By dry fitting all four pieces of the frame together, I can then take my measurements. And to make sure it fits easily, I cut the back slightly smaller so it will slide into place without any problems.

However, fitting the plastic isn't as straightforward. The groove for this is not easy to measure side-to-side once all four pieces are dry fit. This means I'll have to come up with another way of getting my measurement.
