Electrical & Soldering

After doing some testing on the audio jacks, I only used one of the three wire lugs. The arrow is pointing to the center lug that I soldered my wires to.

Soldering is easy if you follow some simple steps: loop the wire through the lug and back onto itself, heat the wire and the lug from underneath with your soldering iron or gun. Then once the wire and lug are hot enough, the solder will melt and flow when you touch it. But if the solder doesn't melt, keep on heating until it does.

Just when I thought I was finished, I had to make one more stand-off and weld one more bolt that went into the center. Again, for support because of the new random jack arrangement.

I used a 30" long wire on each jack knowing that these are longer than needed. But I also knew that we could trim them to length at the assembly (at the Escape Room).

Here is something that I've only heard about, but I've never been up close to one before...until now that is. It's called a 'Flash Cracker' (secret weapon) which is an electrical device that shoots out sparks and makes a loud bang with each spark. It's controlled by a switch (red button) or by remote control depending on your application.

This is something Matt bought and I was very happy to install it. However, I received it after putting in all the holes for the audio jacks. That meant it was going to be a challenge to install it, but I did find a spot that should fit.

Working With Metal

I'm going to build a box to go around the secret weapon because having real sparks and a wooden box might not mix well long term. I'm going to make this box out of aluminum diamond plate that I had laying around. Here I'm cutting my work piece on my table saw using my crosscut cut sled.

I cut two pieces which was very easy to do.

Next I started bending my work piece until I had a box shape.

I used a workstop behind my work piece so it didn't move while I was pounding on it with my soft-faced hammer.

After a few minutes this is what I came up with. And I used pop-rivets to fasten it together.
