33 Coupe Steering Column 2        11/2/03

This is what it looks like when I was finished cutting. The area on the bottom clears the column drop and should be enough clearance in case I need it to angle it to the front a small amount.

Now you can see the back of the dash extender with the column drop in place. I drilled holes every 8" to 10" along the top edge which will use 5/16 bolts to hold the dash extender to the dash. The bottom of the dash has a lip on it that mates with the dash extender just like you see here. The ends will use #10 sheet metal screws that go into the A pillars.

Here you can see the clearance hole for the column in the firewall. As I was enlarging the hole, I was at the same angle the column would be at which means the hole isn't round. After some careful fitting, the column fits nice and snug. Notice I had to enlarge the area around the column drop because of the angle the steering column ended up at. I'll make this look a little better before I paint it.

Here you can see how the hole isn't round. The firewall is 1/2" thick but it's no match for the carbide when mounted in an air grinder. You really have to be careful when removing material so you don't go to far because the fiberglass cuts easy. I came out right where I thought it would on the engine side. Now I can install the column and see where the steering shaft will go on this side so I can finish the headers.
