Machining Continued
I'm roughing in two holes that will hold the spices.
I ground a 1/8" radius on the end of my boring bar so
the bottom of the pockets would have the same. I figure it would be
easier to remove whatever's inside in place of a sharp corner this way.
Boring wood goes quick and it leaves a nice finish as well.
Here you can see the bottom with the radius at the corner. The pocket
size is 1 3/4" diameter.
When the top is turned 90 degrees, the large radius on the lid provides
clearance to access the pocket.

Making Handles
I'll be using hard maple for the handles but I'll have to glue some
pieces together to end up with the size I want again.
Here I'm using a single clamp to do my glue up this time.
The next day I squared each piece to 1 1/2" square X 3" long, however,
these dimensions are oversize. I plan on making the handles 2" long X 1"
diameter when I'm finished.
I'm using my four jaw chuck to turn one end to 1"
diameter X .900 long (just under one inch). I also drilled and reamed a
1/4" diameter hole, which will be used for a pin that will go through
the lid and into the base.
Here is my handle so far, which doesn't look like
much...yet. My next operation will be to remove my four jaw chuck and
then use my three jaw chuck to hold on the 1" diameter. Knowing this
I'll need a little extra strength on my work piece so I cut some wooden
dowels 1" long and placed them in the holes. This will help provide
some strength to
the material I removed during the drilling and reaming earlier. When I clamp on this area I don't want to crush the hole
with the chuck jaws.
