I was between projects one month before Christmas and
decided to make a present for my granddaughter Jojo. Juju turned one
years old in October, has been walking for a few months now and I
thought she might like something to sit in, like a rocking chair. Now
this rocking chair will be scaled down to fit someone of her age or a
little older. Or she can put a stuffed animal in it when she gets older,
her choice!
The material I'm using will be pine and black walnut,
which should look good together. The size will be 26" high X 12" wide X
11" deep (seat). The black walnut will be used for the rockers which
should work good because it's a hard wood. With that said, let's get
started.

Making Chair Parts
I need to do some glue-ups to make some larger pieces so I'm
skimming the sides on my table saw. This is to make sure I have nice clean edges
to start with. I'm using my feather board to make sure my work pieces
stay against the fence.

|
I'm using #20 biscuits for all the pieces that will be glued together.
My biscuit joiner is adjustable so I can use about any size biscuits I
want.

Here you can see I'm gluing some pieces together. BTW, those new
parallel clamps work great.

Making Patterns
What you see below is a compass that I made a few months ago.
And as you can see I have maxed out. What I'm doing is making
a pattern for the rockers which need a large radius.
|
|
I used my paper pattern and transferred the shape to my work piece.
|
|
Then I used my bandsaw to cut it out leaving the line.
Then I used my belt sander for the convex radius but used my oscillating
drum sander for the concave radius. Then I used some 80 grit paper
wrapped around a wooden dowel to finish the radius.

Mak'n Sawdust
I used my thickness planer for all my glued pieces.
|
|
Here I'm squaring the seat for the chair. This crosscut sled works great
for this and I used it on some other pieces as well.

More Patterns
I'll be adding a heart and a curved pattern at the top.
