My granddaughter Audrey, is going to turn six in May so
I'm making her a birthday gift. She loves playing with Lego's so I'm
going to make her a table just for that purpose. This table will be 21"
square X 10" tall and it will be made out of plywood and poplar.
Working With Wood
The first part I'm going to be working on is the table legs.
I'll be making one long piece and then cutting the legs into pieces later.
Here I'm ripping my leg pieces to 3 1/2"
wide.
The next step was gluing and nailing those pieces together. I used my
pneumatic nailer with 18 gage X 1 1/4" long nails.
Here is what it looks like after a few minutes of clamping and nailing.
The over all length is 35" here.
While the glue was drying on the legs above, I started working on the
table top. I'm cutting some poplar that will go on the outside of the
plywood below, like a border.
Next I sent them through my table saw and cut them to 1 1/2" wide.
I bought some birch plywood that was 2' X 4' in size and then cut my
work piece to 20 1/8" long.
I then used my crosscut sled to cut the other dimension to the same 20
1/8" long while making it square as well.
Here are the pieces of poplar that I've sanded and cut the length slightly
oversize because I'll be mitering the corners at the assembly.
Before mitering the corners, I ran the top edges through my router using
a 3/16" roundover bit. This will soften all the edges on the top surface
where little hands will be working.
