My daughter Angela wanted me to make her two, 'Tic-Tac-Toe
Racks' for her Escape Room. What's a Tic-Tac-Toe Rack? You'll have to
wait and see. Also, if the racks came out nice she wouldn't
mind having one for her house too. Now this rack will serve double duty
but I'll get into that later.
Working With Wood
I'm using pine for this project so I picked out the best
pieces that I could find, which isn't easy anymore because lumber today
is not very good. Anyways, the first thing I did was put all of the
eight foot boards
through my thickness planer.
Next I cut most of my pieces to length
using my compound miter saw.
I'm going to use a half-lap joint for this project,
which should work good. I cut a small piece of scrap to the size I
needed (arrow), cut through my work piece, removed it and then cut the other side of the slot. Once I had those cut I
moved my work piece as needed to remove the waste.
This process worked great but picking out the center of each slot takes
time. However, if I owned a dado set, this would have gone much faster.
Here is what it looks like after about an hour of cutting all those slots. So far
this is looking like you could play a game of tic-tac-toe.
Now it's time to make the X's so I'm sanding each piece before I take
them to the tablesaw. I'll be using a half-lap joint on these pieces as
well. I trapped my work piece between some scrap wood to hold it in
place while I sanded it.
I used the same block on these pieces just I did on the larger ones.
Soon I had a pile of wood with a slot in them. The blue tape was to help
with tear-out, which worked pretty good.
To find the exact center I cut one slot, measured the
depth and then calculated how much more I needed. Once I had my number,
I used my dial indicator and moved my saw blade the correct amount. And
to do this you don't need to find the exact center of the blade, you
zero out your indicator, move the blade upward the desired amount, and
that's it. But make sure the blade doesn't spin or move otherwise your number won't be
right.
And there we go, each piece sits flush with the other.
