Tables and Benches   2                                                6-2022

Woodworking Continued

Here I'm clamping both pieces together, then I used a soft face hammer to make sure both surfaces were flush with each other, and then I drove in a screw. Doing it this way is slow but it works good. However, I didn't glue these pieces together like I would normally because of how long it was taking. By the time I would've gotten to the other end, the glue would be almost dry and I wouldn't be able to adjust the two pieces.

Here is what it looks like once I've put a 1/8" radius on all the top edges only.

Back To Metal Working

Now it's time to start building the table and two benches. I'm using the same process as before to tack weld everything together. What you see here are the legs for the benches.

And here is table. What I'm doing is spreading the legs slightly to make sure they end up square once I'm finished. Notice I've turned the  movable jaw around on my clamp so it pushes instead of pulling. These clamps weren't long enough so I'm using a scrap 2 X 4 to make up the difference. The sawhorse is being used as a support.

Final Touches

I put four coats of matte finish clear polyurethane on the top surfaces and two coats on the bottom.

I placed the table frame on my dolly and moved it out of the way while I'm working on other stuff because it's heavy.

I bought these plastic caps to install into the feet of the legs. This way it won't scratch the floor.

I used a soft faced hammer to install them and they fit great.

All Finished

Here it is all finished. The size of the table is six feet long by two feet wide. The benches are five and a half feet long by 10" wide.  And I can't believe how heavy it is but it should last for a very long time because it will be used inside.

Here is the 12 foot long bench in the lobby, which came out pretty good. We had about seven people on it and it was very stable.

And here is the table and benches in her multipurpose room. In fact we used it three times the day I brought it over. Once for an interview for a new employee, then a meeting with a city guy and we all had lunch on it. Angela was happy with it which makes me happy and that's all that matters to me.
