Shower Shelf  1                                                1-2023

I've lived in my house for over 10 years now and I really love almost everything about it. I say almost, because the shower in the master bathroom only has a soap dish, which means it lacks any kind of shelving or nooks and crannies for placing other items on.

Now my shower enclosure is made of fiberglass, which means I'm limited on the type of shelves I'm able to buy. But if I had tile instead of fiberglass then this would be much easier but I don't. And I'm not going to use the suction-cup style shelf because that's not going to stay put for long. So where does that leave me? Well it looks like I'll be making something.

What I want is a corner shelf, triangular shaped, yeah that would be great. Wait, make that two shelves, spaced about one foot apart, yeah, that would be even better! So let's get started.

Shower Shelves

I'm going to make these two shelves out of plastic, VHMW polyethylene which is very weather resistant. The size below is 12" X 12" X 1/2" thick, which I'll cut diagonally to make my two shelves with.

Here is a better view of the 1/2" thickness.

I'm going to make the brackets out of 316 Stainless Steel because of how well it resists harsh environments. The size is 1/8" X 1.0" X 36" which is overkill but I couldn't find anything thinner. Anyways, this should work perfect for this wet condition.

Here I'm cutting the plastic diagonally on my tablesaw using my crosscut sled.

A few seconds later I had two shelves.

I made a cardboard template of my shower wall and noticed it didn't match my shelf. Turns out my shower wall is out of square so I'll have to make another cut.

Using my template I drew a line on my shelf and again used my crosscut sled to make another cut.

I used my belt sander and sanded to the line to make my radius.

Here you can see what it looks like using a framing square. Yes it looks odd but now it matches my shower.
