I made these aluminum soft jaws for my bench vise out of necessity
because my old ones were very thin, used hard over the years and were in
need of replacing. My old ones were 1/8" thick with a small magnetic
strip glued to it. The new ones are 1/4" thick and also have magnets.

I made two sets, one for me and one for my son-in-law. I
started with 1/4" angle aluminum and machined every surface to make sure
they were square and parallel.

|
I used 1/4" diameter X 1/8" thick Neodymium magnets that I bought from
K & J Magnetics, which
worked out great. I used a drop of Loctite under each one to make sure
they don't come out.

Here you can see the 1/4" thickness that should
provide years of use.

This was an easy project and didn't take long to make.

They are 5" long and so far they have out preformed my
old ones hands down. And I expect they will last much longer too.
